How do you incorporate interesting colour accents into interiors without it becoming distractingly dazzling? Well, these three modern home interiors set the tone just right with a multitude of muted colour shades that add uplifting accents without provoking a headache. We look first at a Russian competition entry that features a colour coded home layout to define each living block. Our second featured interior is a home fit for a creative mind, with a well equipped music area and a gallery of KAWs statues that take over the living room. Lastly we look at a daring home design that delves into geometric pattern whilst pushing back hues into the muted spectrum.
Measuring 98 square metres, this home design was created in Saint Petersburg, Russia, for the FUTURIST competition for young designers. In the living room, a black ladder shelf darkly contrasts with a soothing muted blue accent wall.
A light living room rug makes a tonal connection with the cream sofa. An assortment of accent cushions cheerfully accessorise the understated upholstery.
A Scandinavian style chair adds a stylish moment of interest to the living room furniture arrangement.
The apartment layout is divided into 3 sections, the communal family blŠ¾ck, the parents block, and a child block. Different colour accents define each section of the home to playfully mark the divide.
The sense of interior space is increased by placing emphasis on the ceiling height. The seam between the walls and ceiling is blurred by a smooth bend of cornice. Arched doorways and curved partition walls complement the curve of the crown moulding.
Dining chairs are coloured with an eau de nil finish to gently complement the slightly darker wall shade. Above the round dining table, a white dining room pendant light ties in with the paler elements in the open plan living space.
Wheat coloured walls set a subtle base colour for the parental bedroom, where a butter yellow side table brightens the space beside a pale apricot upholstered platform bed.
A black lamp makes strong contrast against the brighter bedside table.
Natural wooden elements weave in an earthy essence.
A retro inspired telephone brings the blush pink accent to the kid's desk.
Pink stars create a cute pattern across the kid's bathroom floor. A unique bathroom sink honours the fashionable arch trend, mounted on top of an equally curvy yellow vanity unit.
Yellow tiles mark the splash zone around the bathtub and shower.
The powder room is a cubist inspired space with a jaunty red and yellow palette.
The master bedroom has an entirely different vibe with a predominantly white and grey decor scheme.
A series of three decorative vanity mirrors and a floating unit make up a contemporary vanity area.

This creative home design speaks of art appreciation. A large KAWS statue perches on the end of a modern sectional sofa, where it puts the ottoman out of use. The design object gives the room instant character and unusual wow factor.
The duck egg blue sofa is accented with deeper blue and tan scatter cushions. Concrete grey walls create cool contradiction to warm natural wood furniture and accent panelling.
The round coffee table is tinted with an aqua tone that complements the couch.
A second KAWS character hangs out by the TV and a modern wood media unit.
A soothing shade of blue paints the kitchen cabinets, which wrap around into the hallway of the home to frame a glass wall bathroom design.
Black and white floor tiles pattern an eye-catching first impression.
The elevated lounge area offers storage space underneath. An abstract wine storage rack is mounted right above the dining room table for easy mealtime access.
A free wall has been transformed into a music area, complete with piano and multiple guitars.
A green SMEG fridge freezer makes a colourful addition to the blue and wood kitchen design.
The interim piano room runs into a bank of hallway storage units.
Inside the glass wall bathroom, a unique pedestal sink depicts the Campbell's tomato soup can that inspired Andy Warhol's artwork.
This muted red and blue home interior is shaped with circle and racetrack motifs throughout, which give the project a fashionable edge. Two round coffee tables also carry the trendy fluted finish that ripples through most home designs of the moment.
A grey TV stand cools a red focal wall in the living room, where the fluted texture is stretched into large format.
Geometric tiles pattern the home entryway, beneath a sleek racetrack-shaped mirror.
Zebra print chairs communicate the homeowners wild side.
The geometric entryway tiles flood across the adjacent kitchen diner, creating a hard wearing surface that's easy to clean. A linear chandelier strikes a bronze accent above the dining island.
The muted red and blue colour palette continues into the master bedroom, covering the walls and wardrobes. A beige upholstered bed adds a moment of light.
The bedroom rug displays a cool graphic print that complements a piece of modern wall art.
A cute mural adds a playful touch to the kid's room.
